The Key to Pushing SaaS Over the Top

I have been watching the SaaS market since it really started to take off. The fact that business users could run around IT and get applications they wanted was an interesting phenomenon that helped get the space going. But many companies I talk to are still resistant to the idea. One big obstacle is that IT likes on premise solutions, because then IT is needed to take care and feed the application, And in this down economic environment, that helps with job security.

But yesterday got me thinking. I was out doing sales calls, and while on the road, I was using my smartphone a lot. In fact, I have been shifting my daily routine over to my smartphone even when I am in the office with my computer. Except for a very few applications, I do everything on my phone. I have estimated that I now do between 50-70% of my daily routine on my phone. The reason? It is just easier, and makes me less encumbered.

What if I could do everything on my phone? That becomes the question that fills my thoughts. And why can’t I? Because some applications just are not made for phones. But that is changing. What if SaaS becomes synonymous with mobile phone access? If that happens, SaaS really takes off. That is not to say everyone uses their phone for everything. But for a growing portion of the workforce, this becomes the norm. The key is going to be when software companies stop thinking of porting on premise solutions to SaaS so that they can be used on a desktop/laptop. They key will be when they port their on premise solutions to SaaS to be used on a phone. When that happens, watch this space. It will be hot.
